I purchased this kayak from REI about a week ago and am very pleased. It tracks pretty well in the water and the cockpit is large enough to accomidate my 75lb Weim while paddeling. It seems to be made better and have more features than kayaks of a similar price point. This is my first kayak, but I would recommend it for a beginner.

I bought this Kayak at the end of the season last year. Great for beginners using it on flat water -- lakes and slow rivers/streams. I have used it extensively this summer. It is fast -- I keep up with fellows half my age without too much trouble. It is easy to learn on -- and light enough to be managed by one person. I carry mine on top of a van using a Thule Glide & Set. I'm 58 and not all that athletic. I can carry it by myself 100 feet easily. My only complaint is the back hatch / dry storage area is very hard to open and close. If you're looking for a durable, easy to use kayak -- the Necky Manitou 13 should fit the bill.
