Kayak fishing has become very popular and most kayak manufacturers now offer models specifically for anglers. But some of us, including myself, have a traditional recreational or touring kayak and just want to have some of those conveniences that are now found in the popular fishing kayaks. One of the easiest ways to add some fishing comfort is by installing a rod holders (or two, or three...). No longer do you have to struggle with paddling while your fishing rod is lying in the cockpit. Adding a rod holder to your kayak is easier than you think. Just plan ahead.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Drilling or modifying your kayak can (and probably will) void your kayak warranty. Read and understand all of your kayak warranty information before attempting any modification.

Rod Holder Options
There are a couple different options for rod holders depending on budget and your fishing style.

  • Angled flush mounted rod holders - most common for holding your rod while paddling to your fishing spot.
  • Deck mounted or flush mounted brackets for removable rod holders - can serve a dual purpose of holding your rod while paddling to a fishing spot and also while paddling trolling for fish.

The angled flush mount rod holder is probably one of the most inexpensive options for outfitting a kayak. Usually priced well under $10 for an ABS plastic version or upwards of $50 for a stainless steel version. This type of rod holder basically just consists of a angled tube that mounts flush to the kayak deck. Just slide the butt of the rod in the tube when not in use. Most fishing kayaks have at least 1 (usually 2 or more) outfitted within easy reach. The most common area to install these types of mounts are directly behind the seat on the left and right side so the rod extends away from you and allows a full paddle stroke.

Deck or flush mounted brackets are designed to be used with removable rod holders. One of the most popular brands is Scotty. While these types of rod holders can be slightly more expensive (compared to the fixed angled rod holders mentioned above), they do offer more flexibility in not only in being able to manipulate the position the rod holder up, down as well had pivoting, but you can usually find different compatible mounts such as drinks holders, cameras mounts, fish finders mounts and even outriggers to name a few. If you want to additional functionality to your kayak this type of rod holder system something to consider. These types of rod holders also offer holders specifically for your fishing gear whether it be flyfishing, spinning, baitcasting or spincast equipment.

Where to Install
One of the best places to get ideas on where to install your rod holder is by looking at a specialized fishing kayak. Take a look at this fishing kayak to get some ideas:

Before you pull out the drill, grab your kayak, paddle and fishing rod and head to the yard. While sitting in the kayak in the yard go through the motions of fishing and paddling determine the best location to install your rod holder(s). Once you decide on a rod holder location take your paddle and do a few practice strokes. While the holder interfere with your stroke? When you are ready, use either the supplied template with your rod holder or make a template. Mark your kayak and drill your hole. Insert the rod holder and continue to mark the screw holes (or if installing in a bulk head use pop-rivets). Note: if installing in a bulk head it is important to seal the rod holder, and flange with marine epoxy sealant and also around any rivets to keep any water from entering the bulk head area.

Now get out there and have fun kayak fishing!
